The Endbringer's Thoughts | Issue 4: Tag Teams, Ric Flair... |
First on the agenda: tag teams, what the WWF should do with them, and the lack of them in WCW. Tag teams are a very important part of wrestling, and a few good ones in a TV show/PPV will grab ratings. The two superpowers of wrestling are on totally different pages when it comes to tag teams.
The WWF has a surplus of tag teams, and has very good teams in the Outlaws, Southern Justice, Headbangers, Too Much, LOD 2000, DOA, etc. With new teams coming in such as the Pitbulls, Samoan Gangstas and others, combined with current teams and dream teams like Kane & The Undertaker and The Rock and Owen Hart, tag team matches are great ratings draw. Unfortunately, some teams are underused or used in a not-so-smart fashion. Such teams are Too Much, LOD 2000, and the Headbangers. Too Much should be used in a feud with Kaientai or other light-heavyweights to get that division going again. The Road Warriors are arguably the best tag team ever, and contrary to popular belief, they still have a lot left in them. Subjecting Hawk to a kinda funny but really degrading gimmick, and sticking Animal with Droz is an adequate replacement but wastes obvious talent in Drozdov. The Headbangers are really underused and need a push big time. A heel turn would be OK, as some rumors have stated, but they're over with the fans, and the former tag champs deserve a push.
Now, to the non-existent WCW tag team division. It's a well-known fact that Eric Bischoff hates tag teams, or at least the idea of the tag team division. He enjoys big-star tag team main events, which he's used to death, headlining the last 200 pay-per-views with them, 150 involoving Hogan when he was champ so he wouldn't have to defend the strap. Who has the tag team titles? Scott Hall and the Giant, who don't even come out with them anymore. The current champs are about as mismatched as Dustin Runnels and Chyna. Don't get me wrong, the WCW HAD good tag teams, let's take a look at them: The Steiner Brothers: The bigger one is in the NWO Hollywood, the other is WCW and feuding with him. Harlem Heat: Same deal, except when Booker T returns he is expected to go NWO Wolfpack. Uh, that's about it, I think. Now I see why WCW dropped the division. Oh wait, there's still High Voltage, the Public Enemy, The Dancin Fools and The Armstrongs!!! Never mind. I guess they figure main event tag teams with Luger & Sting vs. Hogan & Giant or whatever for eternity. The WWF has the edge cause they do that, and they have a tag team division. WCW should reconsider their choice, before the WWF eats them alive.
Now on to the Nature Boy, Ric Flair. He is expected to return to WCW shortly after a gruelling court case which made a mockery of Flair, his integrity, and all of professional wrestling. There have been obvious hints of Flair re-forming the Four Horseman, with the members probably being Flair, Dean Malenko, Steve McMichael, and Benoit. Flair should show up at the cage match between Hennig and Malenko on Nitro. The big problem: if you haven't heard Terry Taylor and Kevin Sullivan, WCW's head bookers for Nitro, have been canned. Guess who's replacing them? Bischoff and Hogan. That's right, I hear all your groans, but it's true. What does this mean? Well, if you remember a while back Bischoff was talking about his mighty pen, he was referring to Flair, that he knew he would come back to WCW or be a very unhappy man. Will Ric Flair return to glory, or get jobbed out the rest of his career. We all know he doesn't deserve that, but Bischoff and Hogan couldn't give a damn.
Hmmm.....what else? Oh, just a thought. Nitro really sucked this week. Hogan and Bischoff were the bookers. Get the point? No, don't give me that "RAW-wasn't on-so-it's-OK-to-slack-off" speech, save it for someone much dumber than me. This is gonna be a growing pattern for the next little while, and WWF had better jump on it.
Gee, I guess that's it. Well, till next time,
Endbringer
